Huawei seeks summary judgment in lawsuit against US ban

The world’s largest telecommunications equipment supplier said on Wednesday that it had filed a “motion for summary judgment,” which requests that the US court rule in its favor as a matter of law. The motion seeks a judge’s decision without going to a full trial. “The US government has provided no evidence to show that Huawei is a security threat. There is no gun, no smoke. Only speculation,” Huawei’s chief legal officer Song Liuping said in a statement. “The judicial system is the last line of defense for justice. Huawei has confidence in the independence and integrity of the US judicial system.” Earlier this month, President Donald Trump took the escalating trade tensions with China to another level by adding Huawei to a list of firms with which US companies cannot engage in trade unless they get a license from authorities. This prompted American Internet giant Google and its Android mobile operating system to suspend business with the Chinese tech giant. Huawei filed the case in a federal US court in March. Washington accuses Huawei of spying through its sophisticated 5G technology for the Chinese government, an allegation strongly denied by both the firm and Beijing. Huawei became the world’s second-largest smartphone maker after it surpassed the US’s Apple last year. It currently owns about 40 percent of the global market for network.
